I) If the former your Macbook is probably running hotter than normal due to dust build-up in the fans and exit guides. Is it fan noise or more like a clicking sound? You state your MacBook Pro 17" is "noisy". There's a 3rd party patch available that will allow you to run OS Catalina, but I personally prefer to stick with High Sierra. Regarding the latest possible OS for your MacBook from Apple it's 10.13.6. If I were to order from Amazon I'd choose one which comes with a warranty and free customer service advise. (Makes you wonder why so many owners of new or far more recent models of MacBooks are so concerned about their batteries on showing no more than 90%).

Mother board checked out ok and the RAM so I ordered the used power supply and after this long time she booted up! I had to replace the drive but it's running great! It's funny the insurance paid 100% to replace our five handset phones but insulted us with next to nothing on the Mac (which we didn't take a dime).I can't recommend a particular make as I've never replaced the battery on my 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and it's still functioning well after all these years. So I just put it away until I decided to take it apart and see what I could do to raise it from the dead. Looking on EBay the 2012 mini was selling higher than the retail price I bought it for five years ago. And not enough to replace the mini but give me basically nothing for it. Yep he told them exactly what I said and finally they decided to give me a little back of some of our $$ from the last forty years paying them homeowners dues. Insurance was a major hassle and they even sent a contracted engineer to varify my claim. Two years ago lightning took out our phone system and my little gem of a Mac mini quad core i7.
